Maxfield Parrish Picture Study, Week 4

Today we studied Land of Make-Believe by Maxfield Parrish. The kids thought this was a very pretty picture. Arowyn especially loved the ladies in the picture that she imagined to be princesses and all of the flowers in the picture.

Maxfield Parrish Picture Study, Week 3

Our picture study this week was of Maxfield Parrish's work The Sandman. Unfortunately the reproduction of this work in our book only took up a quarter of the page and was in black and white so we looked it up online to get a better look at this picture. We've been mostly sticking to his illustrations for children's books and such so far which the kids have really been getting into and each time they have more and more to say about the new picture we are studying.

Maxfield Parrish Picture Study, Week 2

Today we studied the Two Pastry Cooks: Blue House and Yellow Hose by Maxfield Parrish. This picture is from the book The Knave of Hearts which Maxfield Parrish illustrated. The kids really enjoyed this picture and are now begging me to get the book because they want to see more of these pictures. Teagn’s favorite detail was the lions holding the clock up and the fact that they are wearing chef’s hats. Arowyn on the otherhand liked the chef’s outfits.

Maxfield Parrish Picture Study, Week 1

This year we are trying something new for art appreciation and we are doing picture studies. After much consideration I decided that the first artist we would study would be Maxfield Parrish because the books I found about him in their description stated that he was painter who painted many things that were of a mythical or magical nature and I thought that this kind of art would appeal to a 6 & 7 year old. I actually knew nothing about this artist myself but after looking through the art album I had purchased about him for our art study I realized that I had seen his work before and just never realized it. I love it when the things I get to do with the kids in school turns out to be something that I can also enjoy and learn from as well. The work of his that we are studying this week is The Reluctant Dragon.
